UEFA Euro 2012 Logo Inspired by Fans

This week Kiev, capital city of Ukraine, have hosted the launch for the Uefa Euro 2012 logo. With Poland as a co-host, Ukraine will be holding the 2012 sporting event across 4 of it’s cities. The actual logo has been designed by Brandia Central, a Portuguese basedlogo design company. Strategy and creative direction for the project came from Futurebrand, another creative design company. Alongside the launch of the logo also came a specially created launch video which you can see at the top of the post.

Futurebrand started the design process by contacting football fans, TV stations and football federations to find out what the football tournament meant to them. From those groups, around 16,000 people were asked “What is unique about the competition and the host countries?”.

Both of the custom logo design companies involved in creating this new logo are not new to designing football logos. Futurebrand have been involved with Uefa since 2006 as well as other leagues including the Champions League and the Europa League. Although Brandia Central are not as experienced, their head of design, Helder Pombinho lead the design for the Euro 2004 logo wih Euro RSCG.

The tagline that will accompany the logo will be ‘Creating History Together’. This tagline comes from the fact that this will be the first time that the Uefa Euro tournament has been hosted in central and eastern Europe.

The tagline and the logo will now tour the 8 host cities across the two countries. Some of the host cities include Warsaw, Wroclaw and Pozan in Poland, and Lviv, Kiev and Donetsk in Ukraine.

Despite no price details being released, I can only guess that it won’t be as much as other recently released sports logos. The 2012 London Olympics logo was released earlier this year and cost around £400,000 to make, it’s already faced quite alot of criticism for it’s simple design.
