Making a good swing is probably the hardest thing to learn in golf. People usually change their swings to get more distance or to correct problems. But actually, a swing just involves mechanics and body motions put together the right way. But experienced golfers know this is easier said than done. So what are the basics for a good golf swing?
Your feet should be about a shoulder width apart and pointing slightly out. As you place your club behind the ball, take care that you hands hang naturally down your body. If your shoulders hunch or you have tension in your arms, you are probably too close to the ball. Move back a little. You back leg should support about 70% of your body weight. Bend your knees a little while keeping your back straight. You should keep your eye on the golf ball the whole time. Think of your club as a small and delicate bird, and hold it. You want to keep the bird in your hands, but you don’t want to crush it either. That is how a golf club should be held. A good golf swing will be a fluid, easy motion with your shoulders turning slightly in the backswing and your follow-through complete. Your feet should remain planted on the ground and you should slow down during the backswing. Most problems with a golf swing are cause by swinging too quickly in the back swing and then not accelerating through the ball. You will want to hit the ball in the “sweet spot” or the centre of the club. Hitting another spot would only make you ball go another direction. So grip well and make your shot!
It might help for you to take a lesson or two on the golf swing or even watch the way the pros do it on television. There are numerous articles that exist on the Internet that can help you with your golf swing, so always look for information and take as much advice as you can get.
Experienced golfers know that a swing can take years to perfect. There are “a hundred” things to know and they all have to be working in exactly the right ways at exactly the right time to a have a good, consistent golf swing. Sometimes this just doesn’t happen, but when it does, it certainly is a great feeling!
